Amersfoort owes its origin and name to a fordable place ('voorde') in the River Eem. In the Middle Ages many breweries could be found in the city and the textile industry reached a climax here. The medieval atmosphere is nowadays still present in this city, characterized by many canals and over 400 national monuments.
Nature is also honored in Amersfoort that borders the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Amersfoort, for example, won the title "Greenest City of the Netherlands" in 2006 and a year later the city was voted the "Greenest Step of Europe". These titles owe the city to the policy that is being pursued to preserve the nature and many city parks.
